Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for Life (MBCT-L)

MBCT (Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy) was specifically developed to prevent relapse into depression. MBCT- for Life is an adaptation of this mindfulness-based course for the general population.

The aim of this course is to promote awareness of your mind and body through the cultivation of mindful awareness. Based on principles and practices of MBSR, this course also offers cognitive-behavioral techniques useful in everyday life. Course themes focus on bringing change to how we relate to our "inner events” (thoughts, emotions and urges) that often cause a lot of unnecessary suffering (rumination, distress). By developing these new skills, we can cope better with difficulties, and also savor life and develop a sense of flourishing.

This course is suitable for people wishing to enhance their physical, mental, and general sense of well-being. If you are experiencing stress or worry, or feel generally “dissatisfied” with your life, this course offers you skills to better respond to the "ups and downs" of everyday life.

This is a skills-based course rather than group therapy; it is not being offered as a treatment for specific physical or psychological conditions. It is not suitable for people who are currently experiencing severe problems in these areas.

The course consists of an orientation, 8 two-hour sessions, with a full day of practice towards the end, and involves about an hour of home practice per day.

Taught by Kornélia Nyitray, MD, the online MBCT-L course provides all the instruction and materials you need to practice mindfulness weekly within a group, and daily on your own. You must supply the strong commitment to stick with the course and to practice every single day—when it’s pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral.

We will convene using the Zoom™ video conference platform. It is imperative that you attend the classes, but classes will be recorded for you to review in the case of one absence (if you know that you will have to miss more than one class this cycle, you are invited to participate in a future cycle; participating live in the retreat class is a must).

What is required of you during the course:

  • Participate in the orientation, all eight classes, and the retreat class (all of these are online)
  • Practice daily for approximately one hour
  • Hold yourself and the other participants with respect and kind-heartedness
  • Stay curious about this live exploration
  • Be willing to be seen as human (imperfect and completely okay)
  • Stick with it for 8 weeks

Required Technology:

  • High-speed internet connection
  • Laptop or desktop with speaker, microphone, and video capability: no phones, iPads or other tablets
  • Current version of Zoom™ installed

This course is limited to 12 participants
